So far as I have ever been able to tell, the only significant difference 
is that the passenger seat is the one that is hinged to tip forward.  I 
actually had them reversed for many years on my '3.  I did this because 
(prior to rebuilding the seats) I did not care for the position of the 
seat back and found the passenger seat was somewhat adjustable to a more 
upright position by adding some shims to the little plates the seat back 
rest on.

If originality is not paramount it would seem advantageous to have them 
both hinged.
