The high idle may well be the poppet valves are not seating well, if you
blip the throttle and let the pedal snap back does the high idle go away,
even temporarily, 30 seconds or so, not the low splutter and recover bit
they often do. Another thing that could cause the bit where it dies with
more than 1/3 choke is if a float valve were sticking open and partially
flooding the engine then full choke would wash the sparks away! From my
experience with the 2500 S and TC models full choke on a hot engine should
make it run real rough but not stop it, it will also produce copious black
soot at the rear!

Another way to find a manifold leak is to listen with a tube, this may be
more relevant for the head to manifold  joint where spraying WD40 will smoke
you out if it hits the exhaust manifold, try doing it without hitting the
manifold!  ;-)
