DOT 3 and DOT 4 are basically the same stuff: glycol-based brake fluid. 
The only difference is that DOT4 has a higher boiling point. They can be
safely mixed. Just be careful you don't mix silicone-based DOT5 with
anything else. You can recognise DOT5 by its exhorbitantly high price and
the fact that it doesn't eat paint.
