My original '59 TR3A adjustable steering wheel has some pretty substantial
cracking of the bakelite. Options are a $200 new wheel, or a $50 used wheel,
also with cracking of uncertain magnitude. Neither are particularly
attractive alternatives, given that the wheel will be under a leather cover
anyway.
So...is there a product tried by any of you that is recommended as a
restorative to stabilize the existing bakelite, keep the wheel solid, and
allow a reasonably comfortable grip?
If you don't mind a couple hours work.......(well.........maybe
three)......fill cracks proud with two part epoxy.......sand to contour and
smooth.........sanding rest of bakelight..........prime and spray with 2-3
coats of hardened
acrylic enamel.....then buff out like you would a paint job.........(I used my
washing machine motor buffing wheel) you can even clear coat it if you
like..........looks like new!!! Did it on my '64 Ford Econoline Van about 5
years ago (when I couldn't find another wheel, anywhere)........still looks
great!
There's a book somewhere about how to do it.........but that worked for me!
Good Luck!
