Oliver,
I have 2 cars with "chromies" and usually polish them two or three times a 
season.
I approach cleaning in sessions and usually do one side at a time (2 wheels). 
I take the wheels off the car and sit on a stool and devote 10 or 15 min. each 
with spray or paste wax and a soft cloth.
