Like Willie Nelson I'm on the road again with my LBC 59 TR3 black beauty but
with a working regulator and a battery that is getting recharged I have
managed to stumble across another electrical mystery on my first day back.
With the headlights on, which is all too often since the time change here, if
I go for a spin and turn the ignition key to the off position before I turn
the headlights off the car will keep on running as if I didn't turn the key
off. Pretty panicky feeling when it first happened to me tonight at a little
ways from home. Fortunately I was dumb and lucky enough to think of turning
off the headlights to see if that would do anything. Sure enough the car
stopped running just as I had expected it to when I turned the ignition key.
Next time I stopped and turned off the car I made sure to turn the headlights
off first and then turn the ignition. No problem. The ignition key turn did
its thing and the car stopped. I haven't driven the car around at night very
much before and it is quite possible that every time I had I did the sensible
thing in turning the lights off before I turned the ignition off. Has anyone
ever come across this before? Could I have caused this strangeness by changing
the regulator...which as I said now is charging the battery as it should.

One more before I leave you all in peace.
I want to change the transmission fluid.
It is real obvious where the drain is it is not so obvious where the filler is
or how I know if I have over filled or under filled it. My TR3 is TS50550 and
I think that it falls under the category of a 'new and improved' location that
is accessible from under the car as I read in one of Roger Williams TR
upgrade/maintain books.
I have looked very closely at the Bentley manual and parts catalogs and
haven't located the filler. I haven't been under the car to search for it yet
but I will be tomorrow for sure. I've got a feeling that it is in a tight
enough place that I need to have some hints on where to look and that it may
well not have room for a dipstick. Is there any problem with over filling the
transmission fluid? I have a not so fond memory of over filling an ancient
power steering system on a 1963 Tbird and wishing I had never seen it for
months afterwards.
Also I have some 75/140w generic oil. Is that ok or has someone found some
specific brand or weight that is worth the trouble of going beyond the local
auto store for?

Thanks all very much,
Jim Lee
