Rich, Have you checked for separation of the front engine mounts. This was a devish noise for me and the brokem motor mount is very hard tp see unless to jack the engine. I found mine when remove the engine for rebuilding. The rear mount on the end of the gearbox is ususally all mushy on a typical unrestored car. This can cause all kinds of drive train movement.
