Jim, since you mention that the rotor and cap aren't as clean as they could
be, I'd lay a bet your ignition wires are potential culprits here. The core
of the wires is not copper, but carbon (you probably already know that).
When the wires are cold, the carbon cores conduct spark okay, but when they
heat up the spark has to jump farther across any gaps underneath the
insulation. Sometimes you can see "bad wires" flashing if you pop the hood
at night watch the engine idle in the dark.
You won't lose anything by a complete tune up anyway, and just may have the
problem "wired."
