I guess I'm no fool then, 'cause I had a similar set of symptoms that were
caused by a faulty Ignitor ;-) The magnets in the collar come loose and get
dislodged somehow and you can imagine how that can make a car run.
In my case the problem was easy to see because when I removed the collar, it
came apart and the magnets were in disarray. Another way to diagnose,
replace it with a set of points and see if the problem goes away. Petronix
(actually now owned by another company but I forget who) replaced the collar
for me, but I haven't reinstalled it. The points work fine and it makes it
easier to do things like static timing.
