Hugh: I also have an original type fuel pump. When I rebuilt it, I remember seeing in Bentley's that the valves were to be staked. However, that's not necessary for those pumps that have retainer plates to hold the valves in place. Your car is a '73 as I recall. Mine is a '75. Perhaps they changed to retaining plates on later models. My point is that you don't have to stake them if your pump has a retaining plate. Let me know what you find out.
