Aside from that, the ratios tend to be very different. It might be one thing
to use a GT6 gearset in a Spitfire, but I'd think it would be most
unsatisfactory to use a Spitfire gearset in a GT6. Keep in mind that the
traditional
"racing" gearbox for the Spitfire, as per the Competition Prep. Manual, used a
Vitesse 6/Sports 6 gearset -- effectively giving you a close-ratio gearbox.
Those
ratios are a lot closer to GT6-spec. than they are to Spitfire, and they
helped get rid of the "stump puller first gear" and the gap between second and
third. MkIV and later Spitfire gearboxes had a slightly lower (numerically)
first
gear because of the increased torque of the bigger engines but still not
nearly as low as the GT6 gearbox.
