To further clarify the differences, the GT6 gearboxes are essentially
the same as a MkIV Spit box, with the exception of two major
differences. The gear ratios are the same as the "Competition
close-ratio set" available from Triumph for early Spits. And of course
the input shaft is longer to compensate for the deeper bell housing.
The splines were the same as all early Spits with the 3-rail box
(10-spline) except that it was larger in diameter (1 inch). The only
other difference in the MkIV (full synchro) box and that of the GT6 was
that in at least some of the later GT6 boxes (maybe all of them) there
were spring loaded thrust washers on the layshaft. Bearings, seals and
most other parts not unique to the different gear sets are
interchangeable.

The later Spit boxes were single rail and were more similar to TR7 boxes
than previous Spit and GT6 boxes, including the fine splines of the
input shaft.

Joe
