The control parts of the shifter/gearbox are separate from the
gearbox internals, and can be rebuilt from above (I think) with the
appropriate kit. (Check with Spitfits, for example.) You may not
even have to remove the gearbox if you're careful and don't mind
working under the dash.

problem. My GT6+ shifter was loose an' floppy until the day the
gearbox went BRRAAPPPGRRRKKDDNKKKKZZZbumpbumpbump as I was pulling
out onto the highway on my way to work one morning. The experienced
Britcar mechanic/ex-racer who helped me consider rebuilding it and
ultimate recommend I replace it said it looked like a loose shifter
may have contributed. I got the impression he was talking about
imcomplete shifts that allowed one or more teeth to break off, thus
jamming everything else within harm's reach.
Now I have a tight shifter.
