>Hi all, My TR4 has become hard to shift, and at times refuses to go in

third, and down shifting. Will not go into reverse at times. Any thoughts

Hi all, Should have been more precise in the description of my shifting
problem. The clutch appears to be fine, disengagement and engagement have
not changed. Car has 58,000 miles on drive train, had 49,000 when I
bought it from original owner, has had no work on tranny or clutch that I'm
aware of. It feels like the problem is in the top selector unit, if that
makes any sense. When I have the problem and pull to the side of the road,
after shifting back and forth between first and second that shift " loosens
up " . Third and fourth have become very tight. When down shifting from
third to second, its hard to get out of third. Going into third, it takes a
lot more forward force than it should. Reverse will go with some light
pounding back on gearshift knob. And of course the most fun of all of this
is that it's an intermittent problem. Thanks for the suggestions so far.
Any additional help will be appreciated.

Mike, one thought is that the little balls and links in the gearbox covers
are not moving freely. Inside the cover there are steel balls that are
moved by the three shifting rods. The purpose of these balls is to prevent
engagement of more than one gear. The shift rods have recesses into which
the can balls. These recesses line up with the balls when the rod is in
it's neutral position. A ball will move into the recess of one rod when
another is moved out of the neutral position to engage another gear.

It's possible that the problem is as simple as lack of lubrication where
the gear shift lever engages the shift rods. This area is exposed to the
weather and the grease may have been washed away. Get a can of aerosol
lithium grease and crawl under the car and lub the area down and see if
that improves things.

If that doesn't work you may have to pull the transmission cover and see if
it is still difficult to move the lever when disengaged with the rest of
the transmission. I suspect it will be judging from your description of
the symptom.

Good luck

Dave
