Yes I just went and tried to unscrew the front switch. As I said before the 
actual dipstick hole (in the gearbox cover) had been molested with a cut back 
to the front switch.This switch was only hand tight. So I guess adding oil 
here has been done before and the molesting "by design"! I wonder if I could 
also then use this as a sort of "dipstick". Does anyone know whether this 
location would give the same reading of the oil levelas the right hole would 
and what might be a length of dipstick?

With regard to OD tranny vs non-OD FT has replied ,and I think I can say it 
is a non OD tranny. In any case I will measure the drained amount.
