Scott, before you go to any great lengths, might I suggest you try getting
some good masking tape (the blue stuff, 1/2" wide) and try just following
the outside of the wheel with it ? I think you'll find that it's not that
hard. Then go back with a small screwdriver or something (I used the back
of my pocketknife) and tuck the edge of the tape down between the rim and
tire. It won't hurt anything if you get a bit of clearcoat on the tire,
either.
