A little Permatex Aviation may help. But first, inspect the bore in the
housing for any nicks or gouges. The outside of the seal usually doesn't
need any help.

That's probably as good a method as any. There is a "seal extractor" tool,
sold by Sears, HF, etc which is a T-shaped thing, you drive one of the cross
bars of the T (which are pointed and hardened) into the seal housing and
then use the long handle to pry the seal out.
