Dave,
The company that I work for uses plastic media to remove paint from aluminum
airframes.  When we started we damaged a few but now we have developed the
process to the point that they can take the paint off one layer at a time.
In many areas on the airframe the skin is only .020" thick and it does not
distort or show any damage.  If there were any doubt I would paint a small
piece (one foot by one foot) of thin aluminum and ask him to demonstrate how
the media removal works.  Ask him to remove the paint so you can see the
layers.  If he can do this without causing the metal to bend or warp the
$800 would be cheap.
