5/16" head or thread diameter?  A 5/16" head would be a ~ # 8 machine screw 
unless these are special reduced hex size bolts.

I'm not familiar with a TR6 engine but, 3/8" thread engagement in cast iron 
for a bellhousing is rather shallow.  Is there a alternate set of holes you 
can use?  How about a hole that is through drilled so you can use a nut?

If the engine was a 4 cyl or a V6 3/8" engagement might be enough but a 
straight 6 seems pushing it.
