my 72 gt6 engine has about 500 miles on it now.
it is no longer overheating (due to engine break in friction ?)
the water temp gauge goes to the middle of the range.
if i do stop and go driving (lots of long red lights) the water temp gauge
goes way up close to red.
in any event. once i park it and wait 5 minutes the water temp gauge is very
high almost red.
the car will not start when the engine is hot as in running hot, not in the
red. i have to wait 30 mins for the engine to get way cool before it will
start. with the engine cold it starts fine. the radiator has been recored,
the water pump is new, the thermostat is wide open (when hot). the belt is
firm not loose. the carbs are set rich (i've tried lean too). the timing is
perfect at 12btdc advancing to 24 dbtdc at 3000 rpm. the valves are set at
.010 cold. i sure would like to know what is causing the engine to go hot,
especially after turning the engine off. i can't figure out why i can't start
it when it is hot - as in middle of water temp guage not in the red. does
anyone have any ideas ? on the carbs too, i can't get them lean, as in
getting the idle to drop when lifting the air pistons. setting the jet fully
lean (counterclockwise) the car is still a little rich. however the plugs are
beige not black. any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated. i don't have
vacuum leaks, no leaks around carbs or manifold. carbs have been
disassembled, cleaned and checked twice now. i am beginning to suspect the
cam / valve timing / distributor is off one tooth or gear. is that a suspect
problem ? how can i check for correct valve, cam timing ?
thanks !!! larry, lstein6@earthlink.net
