TR3 Timing Chain

     About 4 years and 20,000 miles again, I found what appeared to be a
timing chain side link in the pan of my TR3. The car runs fine and think
that the chain link might have been there for decades.
     Can someone tell me if a TR3 engine is free turning? If the timing
chain breaks do the valves all hit the top of the pistons?
     My theory is that if the chain breaks, then the engine needed
rebuilding anyway. If it doesn't break, drive it. It's gone this far...
