According to Bill Piggott, the Alfin drums supplied by ST came with both
types of fins, with the circumferential fins being less common.
Does anyone know if the Datsun drums use the Alfin process ? I know there
were some GM aluminum brake drums that did not, with the result that they
dissipated heat very poorly.
The fins are an attempt to compensate for the heat barrier introduced by the
transition from steel to aluminum. I believe that even with the lateral
fins (which cool better due to the 'fan' effect) and the Alfin process
(which reduces the heat barrier), steel/aluminum drums do not cool any
better than cast iron. Their big advantage is the reduction in unsprung,
rotating weight.
