My seat-of-the-pants method for dealing with this is three-fold. You can try
a higher octane gas, you can richen the mixture, or you can retard the timing.
I would suggest a combination of the last two.
Mixture can be checked with the lean-best-idle method. Richen the mixture in
increments, which should increase idle speed, then reduce the idle speed back
to normal with the idle stop screw. Repeat this back and forth procedure
until you get the fastest idle. Then lean the mixture until the rpms drop by
100.
Timing is checked by accelerating at full throttle in high gear from 30 mph to
50 mph - it should not ping. If it does, retard the timing. Also check at
freeway speed when giving full throttle - if it pings, retard the timing.
