the spiral still run the same way? I must be crazy as there have been so
many responses saying to switch, end-for-end the cable.

I guess you're right. But most cables have a washer permanently attached
to the inner cable that will stop it from going further into the sheath.
If this part is at the dizzy end the cable won't force it's way into the
tach.
Anyway, reversing the cable is easy enough to try.
