Assuming that the rear diff and gearbox is topped up with oil, will using a
tow-dolly adversly affect the gearbox when the vehicle is towed for quite
some distance? <

Steve,

The differential is not a problem but the transmission certainly is. Even
if topped up the oil level is still only up to the level of the layshaft
and the layshaft only turns when the input shaft turns and that only turns
when the engine turns. Without the layshaft turning there is no action to
distribute the oil to the rest of the transmission and it is only the
residual oil film in the mainshaft bushings that lubricates the spinning
mainshaft in the stationary gear clusters.

One solution I heard of was to fill the transmission up to above the level
of the mainshaft where it will be immersed in oil. However the most
commonly recommended action is to disconnect the drive shaft from the
differential so that the transmission is not turning.

Remember, the first time you start the engine the layshaft will fling oil
throughout the transmission case and it will infiltrate the mainshaft and
relub it so if the previous trips were short enough and the car was driven
inbetween then no damage was done but if you plan on a trip of 1,100 Km
then plan on stoping every 50 Km and starting the engine. Let it idle for
a few seconds and the proceed on your way. Or disconnect the drive shaft.

Cheers

Dave
