That's true of gel cells, like the (now defunct) Gates lead acid cell.
Supposedly the Optima is a different, patented construction from a gel
cel, and is manufacturer-approved for use (including charge) in any
position. See

Most aircraft use wet nickel-cadmium batteries with "burp valve" vents.
I've been told it's because sodium hydroxide (lye) fumes are gentler to
aluminum than sulfuric acid.
