Nothing terrible will happen even if you don't get all the old DOT 3/4
cleaned out, but of course you want as much out as possible to get the
maximum benefit of the DOT 5.  Ordinary "Brake parts cleaner" should
work fine, I've also used methyl alcohol (from the drugstore).  

Likewise, there is no need to replace parts just because of the change
in fluifs, but it's probably false economy not to replace seals and such
that wear out while you have the system apart.
