I saw a show on Speedvision last night which is a must see for the Triumph
enthusiast. It was "Triumph At Sebring 1963." It is a documentary on the
twelve hour endurance race for sports cars at Sebring filmed by Triumph. The
show featured three Triumph TR4s which were driven in the race. The cars only
had minor modifications using parts off the shelf. They had four speed trans
with overdrive and surry hard tops. The cars had oil coolers with oversize
lines, a bigger cam, heatshields to keep the carbs cool, cold air intake to
the carbs and oversize tires. They used stock brakes with harder pads and
finned aluminum drums on the back. The cars had the floor carpet taken out
but they had to put tar paper down to keep them legal. They also had to rig
up an extension on the wheel wells to keep the tires from extending past the
edge of the fender. They had driving lights hooked up with an alternator.
At one point, there was a camera on the passenger seat while the car went
around the track so you could see the car being driven. This race was with
Ferraris, Porsches, Corvettes, Volvo P1800s, MGAs and other cars. An MG was
out of the race early with low oil pressure. I guess the bearings couldn't
handle it. All three TRs finished coming in first, second and fourth in class.
