While renting a house in college after about six months or so our beige shag
carpet had gotten so scary that no self-respecting woman would walk through
the door (a definite crisis in those years) so We rented a steam cleaner
for the car you could probably get one of those upholstery attachments) got
a bunch of packets of tintex dye from the grocery store. It worked really
well and we were even able to get our security deposit back at the end of
the lease. Just keep in mind...
#1 you have to boil the water then add the dye and drop it in the steam
cleaner while its still very, very, hot.
#2 after the dye has set you have to go over them again with clean water and
some sort of setting agent. (I know they mention it on the box I think it
might be vinegar).
#3 Don't rent the steam cleaner from the grocery store where you bought the
dye. (they tend to frown on that sort of thing.
Of course If you don't have the backing material glued to the carpet you
might be able to get away with doing it in a washing machine on the delicate
cycle.
Good Luck.
Tim

Have any of you had any experience in dying carpets.
My carpet set has faded only on the section that covers the tunnel. The rest
of the set looks like new. I believe the heat from the transmission may have
caused the fading.
thanks
