Kurtis,
As others have said points are actually the easiest to work with for the
electrically challenged. Most of the point conversion electronic
ignitions will give you no increase in performance just reduced
maintenance i.e. Crane XR700, & Pretronix. If you want more fire power
at the plug you have many routes you can take, better plug wires and a
sports coil using the stock points would be step 1 but the higher
voltage coil will reduce the life of your points a little. Step 2 would
be some form of ignition amplifier, CD box, or multiple fire box from
MSD, Mallory, Crane, Jacob's, Accel, etc. all these can be fired with
the stock points or an electronic conversion box some are easily
switched out of the system if they fail so that you can run just on
points home, also because your points are not carrying the current load
to fire your coil they will last a very long time. The Crane XR3000
gives you the points conversion of the XR700 with a capacitive discharge
unit built in you can buy one of these from your local Speed shop for
about 30% less than the Big 3 will sell you the XR700 for. If your
distributor is in poor shape a Mallory Unilight distributor may be the
way to go they are very reliable they have the same advance options as
their dual points distributor and if you buy it from a Speed shop the
price isn't to bad. Earlier this year Grass Roots Motor Sports had an
article where they dyno tested some bolt on parts on an MGB GT the
biggest HP gains where with a MSD ignition box and K&N air filters. One
last point with exception of the XR700 and Pertronix all these
electronic boxes require converting to negitive ground. Hows that for a
pandora's box!

Subject: Electronic Ignition Question
Greetings All...
I'm seriously thinking of converting my '63 TR4 over to electronic
ignition -
Mainly because I'm pretty much an idiot when it comes to the "sparks and
magic" aspects of my car, and I'm assuming that an electronic ignition
system
would make this part of it simpler.
Any advice, suggestions or recommendations?
Thanks,
Kurtis J.
