Ha! You were luckier than I was!! A number of years ago, I was getting gas
at the local station, the gasjockey, being young, foreign, and unfamiliar
with both the car and the English language ignored my advice that the filler
on the 3A goes straight down, not at some typical US-car angle. In order to
fill the car in his accustomed manner, he inserted the nozzle in and then
rammed it sideways so that it 'looked good to him'. After about a minute of
fill-time, during which I noticed an increasingly strong odor of fuel, I
heard the unmistakable sound of splashing immediately behind me. Leaping
from the car, I grabbed the nozzle and shut it off, and considered myself
fortunate not to have become a candidate for the services of the local Fire
Dept. After considerable screaming, I coaxed the gas jockey out of his
office to show him the displaced/ruptured rubber line that connects the
filler cap assembly to the top of the tank. He had pumped about $4.00 worth
of Sunoco 260 into the interior and trunk, ( in those days, a fair amount of
fuel!) which I declined to pay for. ( He asked, but I had already scared his
breakfast into his shorts...) I pushed the car off to the side of the
station, where the gas continued to drool out of the (many) rust holes in
the floor. Mr. Jockey meekly handed me a couple of windshield-towels,
which I wiped my hands on (couldn't reach his shirt) and I informed him that
I would be leaving the car there for an overnight dry-out, and that I would
perform very unmerciful acts on his scrawny body if any further damage
occurred. The following day, the Station's owner gently added about half a
tank of fuel, N/C, and I motored home without further incident. One of my
first experiences with true rage!

Last Friday, as I was filling my TR3A with fuel for a weekend drive to
Whistler, the driver of the car on the other side of the pump started a chat
about "cars". During the chat I looked down at the gas nozzle in the TR
filler and saw a full stream of gasoline running from the full tank across
the short distance of car body and into the trunk.
