I doubt that seriously. They originally wanted to set it to 45 ! But
the outcry from the common citizen was so great that they compromised by
raising it to 55. Of course, it was only supposed to be a temporary
measure, until the "gas crisis" (which wasn't any more real than CA's
current electricity crisis) had passed. It was only later, when our
Federal govt didn't want to give up their illegal blackmail of the
states, that they started talking about how safe it was. (No
constitutional amendment was ever passed allowing them to set speed
limits, they just threatened to cut off the state's highway money if the
states didn't set the limits to suit the Feds. There was talk in some
quarters of secession, but no one wanted a repeat of the civil war.) If
it's possible to smile in Hell, Tricky "I am not a crook" Dick must
laugh his head off everytime he thinks of it !
