I've done it several times on TR3As, no problem.  Make sure the rebound
stop under the spring pan is in good shape first, tho.  If it isn't,
you'll have trouble getting the upper ball joint out, as the stud will
be too close to the spring tower.  However, the spring is still locked
in place by the shock absorber, so there's no way for it to spring
loose.  You can even jack under the spring pan a little, to get more
room to work on the ball joint stud.

Those upper inner bushings used to rot out really fast on my cars too,
until I switched to Nylatron.
