Hi Colleen,

The stalks on the headrests have a spring steel clip. They protrude from one
side
of the stalk and prevent the headrest from coming out. This clip must be pressed
inward in order for the headrest to be removed. The instructions for replacing
the seat covers tell you to do this after you have lifted the seat back
upholstery and can gain access to the clips. this would be after the seats were
removed from the car.

I know this is not the method you would like to use so I have a suggestion. Get
a piece of steel strapping, as used in banding pallets. Bend it to the
approximate shape of the side of headrest stalk. With the headrest almost all
the
way up, slip the strap along side the stalk along side the spring clip. You
should be able to pull the entire headrest from the seat.

If you remove the spring clips, You will not have this problem ever again.
