>I'm looking for suggestions on where to start diagnosing a problem with my

J-type overdrive. The unit is factory installed and I am the original owner

of the car. The car has been in covered-storage for the past 7 years so I
expected some problems when I started it up for the first time two weeks
ago. Even before I put the car in storage the overdrive had not been used
for some time due to a faulty driver column on/off switch. Just had the car

serviced locally where they replaced the faulty OD switch and completed a
'OD filter service'. No obvious oil leaks detected.

The symptoms of the problem are as follows: When driving at highway speeds
the unit engages immediately with no problem but will dis-engage only after

a long delay (if at all). The problem does not manifest itself as readily
at slower speeds. Yesterday I notice that, even with the overdrive off in
4th gear, the unit engages at highway speed (65-70 mph). After prolonged
driving I tried to dis-engage by slowing and downshifting into third with
the OD switch set to 'off' only to the have the car cycle rapidly in and
out of overdrive mode in 3rd.

My suspicion is the solenoid, (which is original), may be the problem but
any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Michael, It very well may be the solenoid. You can check it's elecrtical
operation with the ignition on and the engine off. You should be able to
hear a faint clicking as it pulls in and out.

But even if that part is working fine there may be something in the
solenoid valve itself that is causing the problem. This is a pilot
operated valve and as such has some very small passages and any debris or
sludge can cause it to not function properly. You can remove it and rinse
or soak it in some mild petroleum solvents (petrol or kerosene) and perhaps
it will function ok after that.

Or a replacement (not cheap) will solve the problem.

Good luck

Dave
