Michael...Eastwood makes a material called Metal Wash. According to their 
catalog...when mixed with hot water this non-toxic compound removes grease, 
oily preservatives and contaminates, leaving behind corrosion inhibitors that 
prevent flash rust for up to 3 weeks and promote adhesion of topcoats.  For 
what it's worth....one 7oz. can makes 8-10 quarts. $9.99
