Down is preferable so that the filter remains full when the engine is off. 
Otherwise upon start-up the filter has to be filled reducing the flow to the 
rest of the engine and increasing wear on cold starts.

I've also fitted the additional feed to the rockers of my TR6 to increase 
oil flow.
