Note that, in this case, "It's opposite member" does not mean the other
valve on the same cylinder, which may or may not be fully closed.
One method that works on all 4-stroke engines with an even number of
cylinders, and doesn't require a book, is to pick a cylinder (#1 for
instance) and turn the engine until the exhaust valve is just closing
and the intake is just starting to open on that cylinder. Follow the
plug wire back to the distributor cap, skip to the opposite side of the
cap and follow the wire to the cylinder that is 180 degrees away from
the original cylinder (on a 6-cylinder Triumph, #6 is opposite #1). Set
both the valves on that cylinder. Now turn the engine to the same point
for the next cylinder in the firing sequence (#5) and repeat the
process. When you've gone all around the dizzy, you're done.
