needle jumped revs were at about 2500 rpm.

Michael,

This is a strange one.  I would start with the regulator.  It sounds like
the isolation relay is not dropping out keeping the armature connected to
the battery but you are loosing excitation current to the field.

It might just be dirty contacts connections.
