The brake backing plates can be removed without the dreaded hub puller.
Just turn the locktabs and undo the 6 (4 on early cars) bolts that run from
the axle side through the backing plate and into the bearing housing, then
slide the hub, shaft and bearing assembly out as a unit.  There may be shims
between the backing plate and the axle housing, be sure to put them back
when reassembling.  They set the bearing clearance.
