Roger,
My apologies. I was wrong, I erred, the details were incorrect, and not
only that but my memory failed me.

Brake threads are not 28 tpi as I said below, but 24 tpi, as mjb said. My
story is conceptually correct, except for the part about damaging the
threads in the caliper, and a significant missing detail: between the end
of the brake line and the female-female coupler, there is a 24 tpi female
-> 28 tpi male adapter.

So it goes: Zerk -> 28 tpi f/f coupler -> 28 tpi m/24 tpi f adapter -> 24
tpi m fitting on end of brake line -> brake line -> 24 tpi m fitting on
other end of brake line -> caliper.

My brain is turning to mush in my old age. Good thing I bought that tap and
die set with the thread gauge in it lately.
Hmm...getting older = an excuse (no, make that a "reason") to buy tools...I
like that...
Regards,
Jim

...What I did that worked for this purpose was to get a short length of
brake line with the 28 tpi male fittings on both ends. One end goes in the
caliper obviously; on the other, put a female-female adapter, then screw
the zerk into that. This way it won't really matter if the threads get a
bit damaged.
You do have to clamp down the fittings and the zerk pretty hard. The grease
gun exerts huge pressure and the pistons typically don't want to move, so
the weakest point gives.
