There was a lister,(you out there Tony?) who had made a fiberglass inspection
cover that was shaped based on the original. I used his when I did this
conversion. I cut a shaped hole corresponding to the cover piece and attached
it using those clip metal speed nuts. It fit perfectly and looks great. Don't
know if he has any left or what the price would be. ISTR he only made a couple
of batches to meet the then existing requests and charged for his materials and
time. A real bargain and a fine product. And a great guy by the way.
Without this little part I would have tried to form something out to sheet
metal on my own. Pounding and bumping to make something that would be
approximate.

My original (pressed paper?) TR250 gearbox cover had a cutout area around
the OD speedometer angle drive. There was a metal cover (lets call it an
inspection plate) for the hole. The inspection plate had a bulge that
provided clearance for the angle drive. The inspection plate was held by
sheet meatal screws into clips around the hole in the gearbox cover. This
inspection plate could be removed to access the angle drive. There was a
similar hole and a flat inspection plate over the solenoid.
Before I installed the plastic gearbox cover I cut similar holes and reused
the inspection plates.
I don't believe the inspection plates were used on non OD gearboxes.
I haven't seen the inspection plates listed in any catalogues.
