Hi Bruce
I rebuild my own steering racks,as I have found you can't trust the
reconditioners to put all of the sleeve bearing that goes in the passenger
side of the rack tube in one car! Yes I have taken several recently reconed
racks to bits and found that they have only a half or a third of the bush.
In doing this I have found that all Triumph racks (the models I have worked
on) have the same style inner ball joint that you describe, the adjustment
if my memory serves me is by adding shims to tighten the joint, I have
bought the shims in packs of ten locally (UK).
I would advise you to check the up and down movement of the rack in the
tube, the drivers end is adjusted with the big nut and shims, but the
passenger end will need a new sleeve bearing if there is any wear. Most of
the wear in this bush is caused by the fact that there is a flat for rack
teeth on that side too, and due to the physics of steering, this flat is
facing the direction that transmits the bang load from road bumps to the
rack tube.

| My Bentley manual shows the spacer/bushing and washer. It looks like when
| you unscrew the two outer-parts of the assembly, you can replace them.
But
| the catalogs just sell the whole new ball-joint assembly.
|
| So, if you know what I'm talking about, and you have an old inner-ball
joint
| assembly from a TR7, could you see if you can separate the parts and
discover
| whether there is a spacer/bushing and washer in there?
|
| Yeah, I know, JUST BUY THE BLOODY INNER BALL JOINTS!!!!!
|
| But this is so much more challenging...
