My Haynes says to connect a vacuum gauge to the intake manifold, and
adjust the idle mixture for maximum vacuum, while setting the idle speed
("volume control") screw for a "reasonable" idle speed. Be sure the air
filter is clean, and the valves and ignition timing are set first. Have
the engine warm. Rotate your tires (no, wait, that's something else ...
<g>)
The diagram shows the mixture screw sticking out of the carb body on the
side with the accelerator pump, near the bottom edge, close to the
throttle shaft and kinda behind the fast idle pushrod.
