That's what I did.  Jumpered off the starter.  Then the motor wouldn't
turn because the fan hit the shroud.  What a bitch it was fixing that
with the unit in the dash.  OMG!  This time I put the clips where I can
get at them.  I originally assembled and tested the unit on the bench
with the fan facing up.  Found out there was a bit of travel in the
shaft when you turn it facing down.   I get the shaft again.

Well if memory serves:

switched 12V to rehostat: rehostat to motor:  motor to ground.
