Steve,
If you have goods SHIPPED from Canada to you in the U.S. you pay NO
Canadian tax, either our Federal "Goods & Services Tax" (GST - currently
7%)) or most
Provinces' Sales Tax (PST) - similar to the U.S. States' Sales Taxes.
(Alberta has no PST and some eastern Canadian Provinces have the GST and
PST combined, but the principal is the same).
The same thing applies to the UK and probably all other European Union
(EU)
countries, where they call their GST "Value Added Tax" (VAT - typically
about 15%), altho the U.K. at least and probably the rest of the EU has
no secondary sales tax.
If you buy AND TAKE DELIVERY of the goods in Canada you have to pay the
tax(es) but you can arrange with any competent commercial seller to be
given the appropriate paperwork which will allow you to claim a refund
as you leave Canada. (NOT from your Canadian Embassy - embassies are for
diplomacy, not for day to day commerce!).
Again, the equivalent applies to the U.K.
Hope this helps.
