Scott - First, there was a discussion of TR6 release bearings and pressure
plates a week or two back on this List, which you should also read.

I had the same problem you are having after I installed the Toyota bearing
but not a new pressure plate. An awful squeal from 1st touch of the clutch
and thru the first inch of travel. Here is what I did. I added a Sachs
SC436 pressure plate originally installed in Saabs. Saab used a couple of a
couple interchangable pressure plates so make sure the box says "Sachs". The
second thing I did was to "pin" or "stake" the pilot bush from the back
side of the flywheel. This was done at the suggestion of Brian at Power
British and involved taking a centre punch and hammering depressions around
the outside edge of the pilot bush where it contacts the flywheel, as it
sits in the flywheel. Try to angle the punch while hitting it to drive a
bit of the bush edge into the metal of the flywheel. The idea is to lock the
bush to the flywheel, ie. it can't freewheel. He or I don't know why it
works but it does - or at least did for me. Use some wheel bearing grease
on the end of the input shaft and sparingly on the face of the release
bearing and seal everything up.

Mine has worked perfectly for over a year and as a bonus has a much better
feel than stock.

I know talking more about these clutches seems like beating a dead horse. .
.
but I have to ask about people's TR-6 clutch experiences.

I contacted TRF and told them that my the "uprated throwout bearing
installed
on sleeve" that I purchased from them (Toyota Land Cruiser Bearing) was
making
an irritating scraping kind of noise when it lightly touches the clutch
spring
fingers.

I wanted to be on the record with them as saying that the bearing made
strange
noises IMMEDIATELY upon installation, just in case it deteriorates and needs
replacement.

Other than the noise, which I overcame with a TR-4 type return spring for
the
cross shaft, the clutch seems to work very well. When I hold the clutch in
at
a stop light, there is no noise. Only when the bearing is just barely
making
contact with the diaphragm spring fingers.

TRF had a tech rep call me, and he started back pedaling saying that this
uprated throwout bearing was intended only to be used with their magic
clutch
kit and not the standard Borg and Beck clutch I bought. ( elsewhere)

I got pretty irritated and said that I hadn't seen any such indication in
their
catalog, and furthermore, they shouldn't sell it separately if that is the
case.
So . . . now I'm looking for other people who have used this uprated /
Toyota
bearing and different clutches. (Borg and Beck, Laycock, Beck Arnley, LUK, .
.
. whatever)
If you all could e-mail me success (or failure) stories with this throwout
bearing, I'd appreciate it.

Please note:

I'm not saying the bearing doesn't work as advertised.
I could have gotten the extremely rare defective Toyota part.
I could have also made some sort of error on installation.
I'm certainly not infallible. Although the bearing came installed on the
sleeve, so I can't take any heat for doing a bad pressing job.
