I can't tell you how many of those things I ruined on my Spitfire as
I reassembled it and tried to figure out how the whole thing worked.
I now carry a spare (well, I did when I actually drove the Spit!).
I'd recommend you carry one, as well.
Yes, having a slit in it will cause rough idling, as well as poor
performance at speed (might run OK without a load, but don't drive it
too far!).
PB Blaster is the best thing I can think of for the allen screw.
