Carbon tetrachloride was used primarily as a cleaning agent. It was banned
as a result of several parents using it to clean their children's sleeping
bags. The fumes if inhaled for a time will KILL you, and their children
died.
In my days as an entomologist (one who studies insects) I used it in "killing
jars" to prepare specimens for preservation. It worked faster than cyanide
but has a tendency to cause specimens to dry out before proper mounting
procedures can be initiated.
