specifically need to go near the carbs because they work on pressure to some
degree. Can I get just some simple device that can go where I want it to go,
do what I want it to do, and not overwork the fuel pump?
 Thanks.

Most inline fuel filters are paper and don't work very well on the suction
side of a pump. ( Too much restriction) However most Ford filters used for
carbed cars are a screen.

The Ford filters are ~ 1 1/4 long and have a several different ends.
Here is a list of carbed cars that will get you close.

5/16 hose barb on each end 71 Ford Pinto 1.6L 4 cyl

5/16 hose barb inlet, 1/8 pipe fitting outlet ( commonly sold with the
"Facet" style electronic fuel pump.) Most any 70's early 80's ford product.

5/16 inverted flare inlet, 1/8 pipe outlet 81- 85 Ford Escort/Lynx 1.6L 4
cyl 80's Ford 2.3L 4 cylinder.
